Memories of Gyamkhar Tsultrim Namgyal

from Gyamkhar Tsultrim Namgyal

At the suggestion of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje, Detlev Göbel and Claudia Knoll conducted many interviews with Tsultrim Namgyal and prepared this text with extensive editing and additional materials.

As a young boy, Tsultrim Namgyal had to run from the war with the Chinese Red Army. For twenty months while escaping from Tibet, he experienced extreme hardship. Reaching safety in Sikkim, he underwent a monk education and became the attendant — Soponla in Tibetan — of the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. Until Karmapa’s death in 1981, Tsultrim Namgyal served him in the Rumtek Monastery as well as on many travels around the world.

In 1996 he was asked to resume his former role, this time for the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa. Since then he has served Karmapa in India and on many worldwide travels. Here he shares many of his experiences with both Karmapas.
